The Descendents of Ezekiah/Isaias Roden

1 Ezekiak\Isaias RODEN #50 b. Abt 1595 England d. Abt 1630 Jamestown, Virginia
  m. Margaret BERMAN(?) #51 m. 1623 Henrico County, Virginia  b. Abt 1600 England d. 1658 Lancaster County, Virginia
  Name Suffix:<NSFX> (I)
The list of the living taken in Feb. 1623 lists him asIsaias. TheMuster taken
after the Indian attack calls him Ezekiak - the entriesare without a doubt the
same man.  I think his name was probably"Isaac" and neither list taker knew
how to spell it.

  Margaret:
She came to Virginia in the same year that England sent two shiploads of
youngwomen (many of them wards of the state or inmates ofdebtor's prison) to
Virginia to marry the restless young men.  Itwould sure be interesting to know
whethershe was one of them.
Margaret was unbelievably independent.  After Ezekiah'sdeath sheremarried
twice but managed hers and Ezekiah's estate on her own, thank you, even though
she after she had grown sons and sons-in-law.

There is no proof that John was the son of Thomas.  He was of thisfamily,
almost withoutdoubt.  Maryland was giving "headright" land toany settler who
came in whetherfrom another country or anothercolony.  No other RODEN family
rec'd headright land.  I think John wasprobably too old to have been the son
of William, Jr.. It is remotelypossible that John could have been another son
of William and Joanna. If so, Joanna was a great deal younger at the time of
their marriagethan we think.   It was not unusual, however, for girls to marry
at 13or 14.  Other records prove that neither Thomas nor William, Jr. namedall
their children in their wills.
Due to the Courthouse fire in 1883 in Calvert County, we may neverfind the
proofs we need.

He may have been the John Roden who was the chain carrier forsurveyor, George
Washington,  when he surveyed land for John Funk inFrederick County, VA in
1753.  It was not at all unusual for teenageboys to perform this function.
Thereisno proof that John was the son of Thomas and Mary.  He couldjust as
easily have been the son of William and Jane.  The presumedlineage is based
solely on thefact that he named children "Thomas"and "Mary" and that he lived
near, and wasmuch more involved with,Thomas and Mary than with William and
Jane

Mr. Haskell Roden of Sparta TN sent me the following information. He insisted
that he had documentation but never sent it.  He has sincedied and I don't
know what happened to his records:" By 1805 bothWilliam Sr. and William, Jr.
were in White County, TN where William,Jr. was living when he served with Gen.
Andrew Jacksonin the IndianWars.  For this service he was awarded a
"preference right" to Indianland in Alabama."
In Warren Co, TN there are several mentions of William RODEN's"preference
right of 160 acres" but no such mention in Alabama.  Ihave asked  several
persons familiar with military land warrants andTennessee land grant laws and
none has any idea what a "preferenceright" was.  I wonder if it mayhave simply
been land on which he had"squatted" and the State gave him the right of
refusal before it wassold to another.

service and I don't know which, if any,was our guy.
